Muscle cramps are one of the most common problems in sport—yet their true cause is still debated. Are they caused by dehydration? Electrolyte loss? Fatigue? Something else entirely?
In this Aonach Community Call, professional triathlete and exercise physiologist Minttu Hukka will explore what current science actually says about muscle cramps—and what athletes and coaches should know.
Drawing on both scientific research and real-world endurance sport experience, Minttu will examine the physiological and neuromuscular mechanisms linked to cramping and discuss practical factors that may influence their occurrence.
Why Attend?
Muscle cramps affect athletes across every sport—from endurance racing to team sports—but the explanations often shared in training environments are not always supported by research.
This session offers a chance to explore the topic through both scientific evidence and elite athletic experience.
By attending, you will:
- Gain a clearer understanding of what research currently says about muscle cramps
- Learn why traditional explanations such as dehydration and electrolyte loss may not tell the full story
- Explore the role of neuromuscular fatigue and physiology in cramping
- Hear insights from a professional triathlete and exercise physiologist working in human performance and wearable technology research
- Take part in a live community discussion and Q&A
What You’ll Learn
- What current research says about the causes of muscle cramps
- Why cramps often occur during or after exercise
- The role of neuromuscular fatigue in cramping
- Common misconceptions about hydration and electrolytes
- Evidence-informed strategies that may help reduce cramping risk
