The Maurten Bicarb System has different serving sizes — 12, 15, 19, 22 and 25. It's not one-size-fits-all. The right serving is determined by assessing athlete weight and bicarbonate experience. In general, the higher the weight, the bigger the serving size. But without experience more doesn’t necessarily mean better — you need to train your guts.
The appropriate Bicarb System should be selected based on the athlete's weight and their experience with the Maurten Bicarb System. For beginners, we recommend a dosage of up to ~0.25 g/kg. For more experienced athletes looking to maximize their buffering capacity and extend the bicarb effect time window, a dosage of up to ~0.3 g/kg is advised.
Example 1
Athlete weighs 54 kg (119 lbs):
12 g / 54 kg = 0.22 g/kg
15 g / 54 kg = 0.28 g/kg
19 g / 54 kg = 0.35 g/kg
22 g / 54 kg = 0.41 g/kg
25 g / 54 kg = 0.46 g/kg
Bicarb System 12 is recommended: Bicarb System 15 is optional for athletes with previous experience of bicarb that would like to maximise their buffering capacity and extend the bicarb effect time window.
Example 2
Athlete weighs 90 kg (198 lbs):
12 g / 90 kg = 0.13 g/kg
15 g / 90 kg = 0.17 g/kg
19 g / 90 kg = 0.21 g/kg
22 g / 90 kg = 0.24 g/kg
25 g / 90 kg = 0.28 g/kg
Bicarb System 22 is recommended: Bicarb System 25 is optional for athletes with previous experience of bicarb that would like to maximise their buffering capacity and extend the bicarb effect time window.
The Bicarb System
Component A — Bowl
The Maurten Bicarb System bowl is designed for accurate and optimal mixing and serving. It is printed with clear instructions, and is sized for single-hand holding and includes a screw-top lid for traveling and storage.
Component B — Hydrogel
History in the making. The hydrogel component draws on our years of extensive hydrogel research to create a specially formulated hydrogel to encapsulate and protect the sodium bicarbonate from stomach acid and allow for easy swallowing without chewing. Each serving contains 40g of carbs to help athletes pre-fuel their race or session.
Component C — Bicarbonate
So minuscule, it’s massive. The bicarbonate component contains groundbreaking mini bicarb tablets designed to offer far greater control. They allow for a slower release of bicarbonate in the intestine — which can both help reduce stomach issues and lengthen the duration of the bicarb effect.
Maurten Bicarb Digital System
Preparation is key — and getting bicarbonate right requires forward thinking. The optimal timeframe for a Bicarb System dose is 1–2 hours after a meal, such as breakfast, and 1.5–2 hours before starting high-intensity training or competition.
Each Maurten Bicarb System includes a QR code to unlock the Bicarb Digital System — created by our in-house nutritional scientists to make it intuitive to plan, prepare, and execute a bicarb session or race. It’s virtually your personal bicarb nutritionist.
